Video analysis at TSV 1860 Munich: Developing the future professional players in German football

TSV 1860 Munich ranks among the leading producers of German football talent, with numerous top players – past and present – having found their feet within the club’s prosperous youth academy.

Youth development remains a priority for 1860 Munich as it strives to reclaim its place among Germany’s top clubs in the Bundesliga. This season, the club implemented Spiideo Perform, an automated sports video recording and analysis solution, to support the development of its youth talent and continue to improve the supply of top players to the first-team.

Embedding video analysis in the academy workflow

All training sessions and home matches are now recorded by Spiideo’s ultrawide cameras, which capture a full, panoramic view without a human camera operator, across three pitches at the club’s youth facilities.

Connected to the Spiideo cloud, footage is automatically and instantly transferred to the Spiideo Perform platform, where coaches can tag, clip and share footage using a suite of analytical and presentation tools.

This effortless capture and preparation process means that coaches can get more out of the footage in less time. Now, video is an important part of the academy’s daily workflow, used to determine focus areas for its teams during training. Tailored footage is also shared with players to support their individual development, and used to support feedback during weekly pre-and post-match meetings.

Capturing invaluable away day footage

As well as recording home sessions and matches, 1860 Munich also wanted a way to capture the same high-quality footage when on the road. Here, the club turned to Spiideo’s Portable SmartCam. Like Spiideo’s fixed cameras, this system captures a 180-degree view of play but offers the added benefit of unrestricted mobility. The lightweight device can be set up and packed away in just 10 minutes, ready to be moved to its next location.

Thanks to the intuitive control via smartphone, there is hardly any effort required from the coaches.

Unlike other mobile systems, the Portable SmartCam doesn’t require manual control or inefficient retrieval processes. Like all of Spiideo’s automated cameras, coaches can schedule a recording via their smartphone in minutes and the Portable SmartCam captures and transfers footage to Spiideo Perform instantly using a high-performance router via a local network or a 4G mobile connection.

A “quantum leap” for 1860 Munich’s analysis process

The system is enabling academy director Manfred Paula to keep a closer eye on 1860 Munich’s talented youngsters. When he isn’t able to watch training and matches from the sidelines, Spiideo Perform’s live recording functionality means he – as well as the academy’s coaches – can watch live wherever they are through their smartphones, tablets or computer devices.

For us, working with Spiideo in the area of training and match analysis is a quantum leap.

According to U19 coach Jonas Schittenhelm, the greatest benefit of working with Spiideo Perform is the outstanding image quality it provides, as well as the ability to pan and zoom within a recording to focus on individual areas or players. This is enabling the academy’s coaches to deliver tailored insight to players to support their individual development – at a far greater speed and quantity than was previously possible.

“The intuitive operation through the Spiideo Perform app means we can make game clips or entire games available to players quickly and easily. Spiideo has become an indispensable tool for us to further develop our players.”
