Case Study

Icelandic Handball Association (HSÍ) | The next phase of Play

Handball in Iceland is a sport with seismic cultural significance and a hundred-year history. Now with a vision to make it bigger than it has ever been, the national federation switched to Spiideo’s “world-leading” automatic cameras.

HSÍ: Scaling Icelandic handball with automated broadcasting and video analysis

Handball holds a special place in Icelandic sport. Despite the island’s population of just 400,000, the country consistently produces tournament-winning teams capable of competing against giants with far deeper talent pools.

Yet, despite this success, fans at home have historically been left wanting more. Held back by the constraints of manual broadcasting, only one top division match was broadcast on national television each week.

Determined to improve the accessibility of one of the nation’s favorite sports, the Icelandic Handball Association (HSI) – which organizes all men’s, women’s, and youth games across the top two tiers of Icelandic handball – partnered with Spiideo to improve its broadcasting capabilities, scaling coverage from a handful of matches to hundreds every month.

Setting the standard for live sports broadcasting

In a first-of-its-kind project for Icelandic sport, HSI has equipped 20 arenas with more than 50 of Spiideo’s AI-operated cameras, capturing every game in high definition without the need for camera crews or on-site production teams.

Through Spiideo Play – the leading platform for large-scale automated broadcasting – footage is transformed into television-quality broadcasts, complete with a consistent look and elite feel, and shown live around the country with minimal human input required.

For friends, family, and fans unable to attend games in person, this setup provided unprecedented access to live events. From senior clashes to youth games, every fixture is now within easy reach. The result? Improved visibility, bigger audiences, and a stronger profile for Iceland’s top sport.

Our vision is to make handball in Iceland bigger than it has ever been before, broadcasting every game on TV platforms – and Spiideo is the leading company in automated camera setups.

Turning footage into effective feedback

HSI’s Spiideo setup has transformed the sport beyond broadcasting – It has reshaped how clubs approach player development.

Using the same automated cameras, teams gain access to Spiideo Perform, the cloud-based video analysis platform trusted by elite leagues and teams worldwide. Match and training session footage is instantly available from anywhere with an internet connection. For coaching staff, reviewing actions, analyzing performance, and delivering feedback has never been easier.

Providing coaches and players with a clearer picture of team and individual strengths, weaknesses, and progress, Spiideo isn’t just elevating HSI’s broadcasting figures but raising the level of quality on display.

We have team meetings where we show players the broader picture, and we also work with players individually, showing them their own clips to help them improve.
