How The University of Edinburgh Sport set up a first-class streaming schedule

Simplifying sports broadcasting using Spiideo Play

From rugby to windsurfing, the University of Edinburgh Sport boasts over 60 sports clubs, 200 teams, and 10,000 student athletes.

There’s no shortage of competition or talent. But, until recently, the university’s feats went largely uncaptured, held back by the challenges of manual broadcasting. Reliant on human camera operators, the university was limited to streaming just one game per week—just a fraction of the action taking place across its facilities.

Putting every student athlete in the spotlight

Determined to ensure every student athlete has the chance to have their achievements seen and celebrated, the University of Edinburgh set out to expand its broadcasting capabilities. Partnering with Joymo, the university launched UoESport.TV—a dedicated over-the-top (OTT) streaming platform and the new home of UoE sports video content.

Supported by Spiideo’s cutting-edge sports capture technology, the university can now automatically record and stream events in high definition throughout its facilities. With four fixed cameras in its sports halls and hockey pitches, and a Portable SmartCam used across its 3G pitches, Spiideo’s sports-specific AutoFollow technology—trained to understand the nuances of different sports—keeps the action in focus, entirely removing the need for a camera operator.

Now capturing netball, basketball, volleyball, futsal, badminton, football, rugby, lacrosse, and field hockey, Spiideo has increased the university’s broadcasting output by over 500%.

And this is just the beginning. Over the next three years, the university aims to increase its annual live-streaming coverage to over 400 fixtures, ensuring that friends, family, and supporters never miss a moment—no matter the sport or level.

If a team is playing at home, there’s a camera there, and it’s being filmed—I think it will just become a part of every fixture we play.

Simplifying the broadcasting process

With Spiideo’s support, the University of Edinburgh recently set a new benchmark, streaming 15 fixtures in a single day — a milestone that would have once required a large production team but was achieved by a single coordinator.

With broadcast-worthy fixtures identified in advance, they can be pre-scheduled within Spiideo Play, Play’s comprehensive automated broadcasting platform, manually or in bulk. All Spiideo needs to know is who’s playing, where, and when.

By leveraging Spiideo Play’s Real-Time Messaging Protocol (RTMP) support, the university can seamlessly send the output to UoESport.TV, delivering high-quality, fully automated broadcasts without the need for human input on gameday.

With less time spent on manual broadcasting, the university is maximizing the value of its captured footage. Performance coaches now receive direct access to game recordings, allowing them to analyze performance, fine-tune tactics, and deliver visual feedback—elevating athlete development and the viewing experience.

The ease with which we can now film fixtures and stream matches is really exciting—and this is just the beginning.
