Amateur Athletic Union: Putting youth basketball in the spotlight
Not many athletes can say they’ve competed on New York’s most iconic street. But with Spiideo’s support, the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) turned that dream into a reality for hundreds of the United States’ future stars.
The Times Square Takeover – a 3-on-3 youth basketball tournament organized to give young athletes a platform to showcase and develop their skills – saw 125 teams from ten states compete under the city’s iconic billboards.
But with Spiideo technology taking to the court, the sold-out event wasn’t just enjoyed by the crowds on the sidelines.
An MVP basketball capture solution
While youth basketball still largely relies on manual recording for video analysis and broadcasting, the Times Square Takeover showed what’s now not just possible, but accessible at every level of the game.
Using portable Spiideo cameras, the AAU captured action across eight courts simultaneously, automatically capturing high-quality footage of every pass, pivot, and play.
Powered by industry-leading artificial intelligence, Spiideo’s AutoFollow technology maintained focus on the action without any assistance from human camera operators. Specifically trained to understand basketball, it effortlessly kept up with the constant motion and sudden transitions out on the court.
Through Spiideo Play – the next-gen automated production platform built to bring professional-grade production to every level of sport – games could be scheduled in bulk by uploading a spreadsheet. Without any guidance, the cameras automatically start rolling at the scheduled time, from the first tip-off to the final whistle.
This automation delivers scalability once reserved for the big leagues, empowering users to capture and share amateur events with families, fans, and scouts far beyond the sidelines.
The combination of Spiideo hardware and software is perfect. It’s so easy to use, and the backend is incredibly robust.
From the court to the cloud
With Spiideo, the AAU isn’t just capturing games at scale; it’s broadcasting them.
Spiideo Play enables events to be streamed seamlessly to external platforms, allowing the organization to air its tournaments live through AAU+, its dedicated OTT streaming service. And not just basketball. With Spiideo’s AutoFollow technology trained across 15 different sports, the same cameras can cover the AUU’s full schedule of events, giving every athlete airtime.
For Michael Colangelo, the AAU’s Chief Content Officer, this is a continuation of a partnership that began at The Walt Disney Company. There, he led one of the world’s most unique broadcasting operations at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex, overseeing as many as 400 games every weekend.
Providing a reliable way to bring primetime storytelling to youth and amateur sports, Spiideo proved itself to be a valuable production partner to Colangelo and continues to do so in his new role with the AAU. Through features such as content overlays, instant replays, and Storyboards – pre-created runsheets that use time- and event-based triggers to automatically guide production – Spiideo Play turns raw footage into television-grade productions, enabling broadcasters to tell the stories of undervalued sports and teams traditionally excluded from our screens.
For families, it means never missing a moment, no matter where they are. For players, it’s a game-changing tool for reviewing performance and pursuing growth. And for scouts, it’s nationwide access to promising talent without a single mile of travel.
When we first decided to launch AAU+, Spiideo was the only partner we had in mind.
